Funny, slice-of-life, NYC-based web series Broad City has received press from the likes of The A.V. Club and The Urly Show. We recently got in on the action via an email chat with Flavors user and one half of Broad City, Ilana Glazer.
Flavors: How did you and [Broad City co-star] Abbi Jacobson meet?
Ilana Glazer: We met in an improv group. We were both taking classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, which pretty much owns the alternative comedy scene in NYC (/America), and you’re encouraged to form your own practice groups. We were lucky enough to find each other in that improv group.
F: What brought you into comedy?
I: We’ve both always been really into comedy — Abbi was PeeWee Herman for Halloween when she was 8, and I was Groucho Marx when I was 9! We also come at it from similar angles — tomboys who’ve always loved SNL, stand-up and performance art, and we’ve each have been lucky enough to get educations in a variety of art forms. I came to NY for college knowing I wanted to inject myself into the comedy scene. Abbi came to NYC after college thinking she wanted to straight up act before she discovered that she could do comedy acting, solely.
F: What has been the highlight of the project so far?
I: The highlight of the project has been collaboration. We’ve worked with amazing talents from our friends to people we straight up admire. It’s SO FUN to meet someone you love and work on a project with them and have something to show for it after, very rewarding - and we feel that way about everyone we’ve worked with.
F: Why did you choose to use Flavors for the Broad City site?
I: Flavors has been so helpful because neither of us have any programming experience, and yet we’ve been able to create a fully functional website that we’re able to update with absolute ease.
Being 20-somethings, we’re connected to like, every social network possible, so the fact that you could implement any (and practically all) social functions into our website was an incredible option for us. Our project is really organic, and we’re dedicated to being truthful in our writing, and having all our outlets in one place really lays all our cards out on the table — our Twitter, Tumblr, etc. I like that we just have to let go of everything because it’s all out there — it’s a very honest forum!
F: What’s next for you all?
I: Next for Broad City is Season 2 and a short film. Our second season will begin release in February.
